译文
初八的月亮，如同半面妆镜，悬挂青空。她斜靠在雕花的栏杆上娇媚不语，梅花的影子随着月光暗暗移过红桥。北风吹来，裙裾飘飘。
注释
望江南：词牌名。又名“忆江南”“梦江南”“江南好”。小令，单调二十七字，三平韵。
初八月：上弦月，即农历每月的初七或初八前后的月亮。
青霄：蓝天，天空。
画阑：刻有画图的栏杆。
红桥：当指有雕饰的桥，或仅仅是对桥的雅称。一说为位于瘦西湖南端的红桥，始建于明末崇祯年间，原为红色栏杆的木桥，后在乾隆元年改建为拱形石桥，取名虹桥。
裙带北风飘：语出李端《拜新月》： “细语人不闻，北风吹裙带”。

这首词的写作时间不详。据词意可知，一日晚，作者和闺中佳人（妻子）在月下说话，作者看见佳人倩影，心生怜爱之情，于是写下这首词。

望江南·咏弦月鉴赏
古诗词中往往有些短章，言少情多，含蓄不尽。词人驾驭文字，举重若轻，而形往神留，艺术造诣极深。纳兰的这首《望江南》即其一例。这首小词清丽空灵。前两句平淡起笔，以碧空悬半镜喻初八上弦之月，随意着墨之间勾勒出一派清冷素雅景致。后接以倚阑不语的娇人情景，又转而刻画月移梅影极蕴情昧的景象。清初著名文人吴绮在《扬州鼓吹词序》中是这样描述它的：
朱栏数丈，远通两岸，彩虹卧波，丹蛟截水，不足以喻。而荷香柳色，曲槛雕盈，鳞次环绕，绵亘十余里。春夏之交，繁弦急管，金勒画船，掩映出没于其间，诚一郡之丽观也。
戏曲作家李斗亦形容它如“丽人靓妆照明镜中”。在桥上观瘦西湖美不胜收，文人墨客皆好在此凭栏吊古，吟诗赋文。连通两岸的红栏木桥，荷花飘香杨柳映色，春夏之际空气中浮动着乐声香气，在这精工雕画的红桥四周形成一种令人沉迷的情境。清代著名诗人王士稹（后人亦称王渔洋）也是为红桥之美深深着迷的人之一。康熙三年（1664年）春，他与诸名士游赏红桥，一连作了《冶春绝句》二十首，其中脍炙人口的一首是：红桥飞跨水当中，日午画船桥下过，一字栏杆九曲红。衣香人影太匆匆。唱和者更众，一时形成“江楼齐唱《冶春》词”的空前盛况。由此可见，此处所状情景，定是精工华美之至，才能让多少文人才子对它倾心不已。而在这样一个夜晚，初八之上弦月斜挂天边，雕栏画栋在清辉之下寂寂无声，妻子独倚画阑，不语，不言。这清空之中出现的缥缈人迹，在读者尚未回过神来的时候又已渐远，梅枝摇曳，疏影乱，暗香浅。
最后“裙带北风飘”一句，来自唐朝李端《拜新月》一诗。纳兰这一句化用可谓巧妙。李端诗中所写，是为少女拜月的情态。诗中少女因心中许多言语无可诉说，故无奈而寄托明月。而纳兰词中这上弦月夜独立画桥的女子，内心有相似愁绪。其实，月辉清冷空灵，女子对月所思，非愁怨即祈望，直书反失之浅露。现只描摹月下独立，只勾勒心绪悠远，情意更醇，韵味更浓。空街无人，临风对月，缥缈之形，真纯之情，可怜惜之态，不由让人思及《洛神赋》中“飘飘兮若流风之回雪，皎皎兮若轻云之闭月”等句，令人神往。而纵观全词，这神秘女子于寒风之中，观月，离去，已置读者于似闻不闻、似解不解之间，而末句以风中飘动的罗带，暗指李端《拜新月》诗意，似纯属客观描写，不涉及人物内心，但人物内心的思绪荡漾，却从罗带中断续飘出，使人情思萦绕，如月下花影，拂之不去。自“斜倚画阑娇不语”一句起，接连三句可谓精勾细画，刻意描绘，而笔锋落处，却又轻如蝶翅。
表面看，似即写词人的所见所闻，又全用素描手法，只以线条勾勒轮廓。而空远之景与罗带翻飞的细节彼此映衬，人物亭立的倩影跃然纸上，沁人肌髓，这正是词人高超艺术功力所在。一词五句而能翻转折进，于平淡中饶蕴深情，确是浑朴超妙。前后相映之间，词人的无聊心绪、无限愁情，全在其中了。

纳兰性德（1655－1685），满洲人，字容若，号楞伽山人，清代最著名词人之一。其诗词“纳兰词”在清代以至整个中国词坛上都享有很高的声誉，在中国文学史上也占有光采夺目的一席。他生活于满汉融合时期，其贵族家庭兴衰具有关联于王朝国事的典型性。虽侍从帝王，却向往经历平淡。特殊的生活环境背景，加之个人的超逸才华，使其诗词创作呈现出独特的个性和鲜明的艺术风格。流传至今的《木兰花令·拟古决绝词》——“人生若只如初见，何事秋风悲画扇？等闲变却故人心，却道故人心易变。”富于意境，是其众多代表作之一。
